Every Wednesday, Farmaround, an organic vegetable box company, delivers a large box of British vegetables straight to my door, writes Julia Stephenson

 

 

They offer great value and I feel happier knowing that the farmers involved in the scheme get paid a proper sum for their produce – unlike those that must face the nightmare of dealing with capricious supermarkets who can terminate contracts on a whim and reject vegetables if they are the wrong size or shape. It’s also a relief to know that the contents of my box have not been sprayed with pesticides.

There is now a wealth of evidence to show that pesticides not only poison the soil and harm wildlife, but also promote cancer and a host of other diseases because of their toxicity. This is, after all, only common sense. Anything that can kill insects is bound to have an impact when consumed by humans. And yet this week the Food Standards Authority claim that organic food is no better for us than non organic.

Fortunately award-winning investigative journalist and author of Bad Food Britain, Joanna Blythman, is fighting back. She believes we must look beyond the lies propagated by the pharmaceutical and pro GM biotechnology companies, in whose interests it is to promote intensive farming.
