Eastern spirituality is in vogue. Why?  Is it a desire to reintroduce mystery into a material world? A dissatisfaction with the single God of Western religions?  Or a temporary consumer fad?

In a debate filmed by the Institute of Art and Ideas (IAI), psychoanalyst and Buddhist Gay Watson, Lama Jampa Thaye and philosopher Mark Vernon debate the rise of Eastern spirituality. Watch The Buddhists in Suburbia here...

The IAI was founded in 2008, to promote all forms of creative expression. It is dedicated to creating an open and vibrant intellectual culture where innovative ideas can flourish.

IAI organizes festivals including HowTheLightGetsIn, which is the world’s largest philosophy and music festival, currently being held at Hay-on-Wye until 10 June. HTLGI brings together philosophers, writers, musicians, politicians, artists and commentators for ten days of debate, talks, film screenings, live performance, and parties– the aim being to collectively explore new ideas and the issues facing contemporary society today. Speakers include James Lovelock, Brian Eno, David Blunkett and Terry Eagleton.

In November it holds Crunch, a festival bringing together the world’s leading contemporary artists, curators and commentators.

All IAI events are filmed and are available on the IAI website.
