Daphne Koller started with a simple idea: make the world’s best university courses available, online, free to anyone who wants to take them.

Motivated by the scarcity of high quality education in countries like South Africa and rising costs which have made it available only to the privileged few, Koller teamed up with fellow Stanford professor Andrew Ng to found Coursera.  ‘We want to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in,’ she says.
