Struggling to get motivated? Diane Southam shares some tips

MOTIVATION BUSTERS:

Convincing yourself you’re going to fail, so why bother? This is the stuff slackers are made of

Watching daytime television

Being ineffective in the NOW because you’re either living in the past or fantasising about the future

Getting up too late

Comparing yourself to others and falling short

Failing to set goals

Believing consciously or unconsciously that you don’t deserve to succeed

Thinking you can motivate others with a carrot or a stick. Better to convince them it’s in their best interest.

MOTIVATION BOOSTERS:

Motivating yourself with a carrot. Rewards work

Accepting that RESISTENCE – in the shape of negativity, indecisiveness or fear – is hovering around whenever it sees the possibility of forward movement in your life

Making lists

Repeating out loud your goals and targets at least twice a day (in private, of course)

Hiring a life coach – short-term. You don’t want to get hooked

Acknowledging that you like yourself much more when you’re proactive

Embracing clichés such as: feel the fear and do it anyway/no pain no gain/what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger etc. The trouble is they’re right

Reminding yourself that achieving a goal is one of the most authentic highs there is
